Box Factory is the creation of Blaine MacDonald. In early 2001 I entered into the new and exciting career of Insurance Investigations after trying my hand at Law enforcement, Corrections, among other things. It turns out a degree in Criminology is a little limiting but what it really trains you to be a fantastic criminal. Unfortunately, I did not possess the mental or moral fortitude for that line of work and stuck to a legitimate life style.
Much of the work required extensive travel and long hours of surveillance, while living out of hotel rooms, eating like a Biggest Loser contestant and almost complete lack of a social life . Much like my first job as a life guard I compared the two as, hours of shear boredom occasionally interrupted by moments of rabid panic and terror.
Travelling around Atlantic Canada with guitar was as practical as checking in a cinder block for my carry on luggage. Then one evening when hanging out in a music store in the winter of 2010 in cosmopolitan Sydney NS. I picked up a ukulele and with in minutes fell in love. Thinking of them as children’s toys I had no idea what fantastic instruments they are, if you think other wise simply check out James Hill, or the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Brittan.
Ten or more ukuleles later I was gifted a book on building homemade instruments where I discovered the incredible world of Cigar Box Guitars. After a long and both equally frustrating and exciting learning experience I love to build, I love the creativity, imagination, the fun of playing and seeing other’s creations. I decided to take my passion and dedicate my time to building.

Hi. I’m Basil.
I’m awesome, I used to live on the tough streets of Memphis Tennessee. Then one day I was tired of the thug life and found that poor rubber head in the photo above me . I was kinda skinny when they took me in at the shelter, so much so they called me Slim but I told shit heels up there that I wanted a cool name and he came up with some John Cleese character. What ever that means. Anyway I like it here in Canada, I’m working hard on rescuing Blaine but man he’s exhausting
